Summer Sun

sunburnSummer is here and many of us will be getting more sun exposure with outdoor activities and work. It is really important to keep in mind that sun exposure is very harmful to the skin causing skin cancer and aging of the skin. I have tried to illustrate this fact by providing you photos of examples of hazards from sun exposure. There are several things you can do to help prevent skin cancer and to keep your skin looking youthful and not sun damaged.

  1. Try to avoid sun exposure if possible especially between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
  2. Avoid tanning beds completely.
  3. When outdoors, protect your skin with a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight and has an SPF of at least 30. Reapply every 2 hours.
  4. Wear protective clothing and a broad brimmed hat which also protects the neck and ears.
  5. Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection. Melanoma can also develop in the eyes.
  6. Teach your children sun protection practices
  7. (Perform thorough self skin examinations at least once a year.
  8. Call and come in to see us if you notice any unusual growths.
  9. For those with increased risk factors for skin cancer such as a personal or family history of it, regular visits are imperative.
